Joshua McLaughlin : Josh has been dancing since February of 2004. He started learning Lindy Hop in Eugene, OR, working with Eugene's non-profit dance group called "Ella." He moved back to Portland in Spring of 2006, where he continues to learn and grow as a dancer. Josh has taught at numerous events including the Oregon Dance Fair, Come Rain Come Shine, Swingin' Dixieland Jazz Festival in Sun Valley, ID, and the Waterfront Blues Festival. He also teaches and dj's regularly at various dance halls in Portland. Josh's main focus when teaching and dancing is on connection and momentum, in making his dancing fun and efficient. Most importantly, he just enjoys having fun with dancing! In the past couple of years, he has competed in various Lindy Hop and Balboa Competitions.
Emily McLaughlin : Emily has been dancing since she was three years old, starting with Norwegian Folk Dancing. When she was fourteen, she started dancing with a German dance group called the Tiroleans. At the age of seventeen Emily started to dabble in swing dancing. After high school she began attending dances regularly and started to work on her game. She discovered her love for Balboa two years ago and has been pursued it ever since. She has danced across the nation, spanning the shores of the West Coast all the way to the shores of the East Coast. She teaches workshops and lessons regularly in the Portland area and DJs on a regular basis. As a teacher, Emily likes to instill confidence in upcoming dancers. She loves teaching Balboa and Balboa Swing techniques. Emily's main focus is showing people how "good dancers" don't have to be serious dancers.
Binky Dykstra (Portland, OR) : Binky has been singing, dancing, and performing on stage since the age of 2. In 1999, she began her dancing and DJ career in Albuquerque, NM when she discovered her passion for Swing Dancing and Classic Jazz. After graduating from the University of New Mexico with a B.A. in Theatre and a Minor in Business, Binky moved to Los Angeles, CA to study with the top instructors. In 2002, she moved to Phoenix, AZ where she co-organized two weekly dance venues and the annual Phoenix Lindy Exchange, which took place in conjunction with the AZ Classic Jazz Festival. In 2007, Binky transitioned to Portland, OR, where she continues to teach and DJ on a weekly basis. She is co-founder of Syncopated Rhythms, a professional dance group that specializes in the dances and music of the early 20th Century. In January, they host an annual event, Swingin' Gypsy Weekend, which showcases vintage-inspired music from Portland's finest musicians. Binky has also taught numerous workshops throughout the U.S., placed in many national competitions, and DJs and judges at various local, regional, and national events.
Whether it's on the dance floor or behind the DJ booth, Binky is known for her creative musical interpretations and unique dance style. She views the dance floor as a canvas, the music as the paint, and the dancer as the brush. She just provides the energy and flow to create the masterpiece. Her passion is to promote dance and music in order to enrich others' lives.
Geoff Young : Geoff has been dancing relentlessly since 2005. He enjoys approaching dance in terms of conceptual body movement, and tries to inspire other dancers to do the same. His teaching methods embody this idea because his classes stray from the typrical counts and choreography of "moves" while delving into why the "move" works the way it does. |
